Cyrus A. “Mitch” Mitchell, Jr., 71, of 1 Sunset Drive, Asheville, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at a local hospital. A native of Iredell County, he was a son of the late Cyrus A., Sr. and Lessie Hatchett Mitchell. He was retired from Trailways Buslines after 31 years of service, the last 13 years serving as general manager. He attended Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Ann Bowers Mitchell; two sons, John D. Mitchell and his wife Jennifer of Asheville and Douglas A Mitchell and his wife Cathie of Leicester; a sister, Fannie M. Worley and her husband Warren; a sister-in-law, Becky Hunnicutt and her husband Bill; four grandchildren, Justin Mitchell, Dylan Mitchell, Adam Wharton and Rebecca Wharton; nieces and nephews, Leigh H. Armentrout and husband Chuck, Charlie and Shelby Armentrout, Scott Hunnicutt, Cheryl Mears and husband Jerry, Mitchell Mears and Jeff Worley. Funeral services will be 12:00 Noon Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Owen officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites performed by Asheville High School JROTC. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Friday at the funeral home and request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 Mt. Carmel Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
