Arden, NC - David Marshall Lancaster, Sr., 85, of Arden, died Thursday, May 3, 2001. Mr. Lancaster was born in Palatka, Fl.
Being a retired engineer and a member of the Senior Executive Service of the US Federal Government, he began his career as a surveyor, working the US and South America on numerous oil explorations and development projects. During WW II he served as an engineer in the US Naval Ordnance Laboratory. He later served in the office of the Secretary of Defense.
Moving into the computer industry in 1958, Mr. Lancaster assisted in the growth of the US space program, working on early US rocket and satellite development. His later work included executive assignments with Philco, Control Data and Auerbach Consulting. Returning to the federal civil service in the seventies, he retired as a special advisor to the commissioner of social security in 1982. He was a member of the Swannanoa P.C.A. Church.
Mr. Lancaster is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Patrick Lancaster, and his sons David, Jr. and Patrick.
Memorial services will be 11:00 am Monday, May 7 2001 in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian, 72 Long Sholas Road, Arden, NC 28704 conducted by Rev. Doug Love.

There are really no words to express how much Ed and I love and admire David and Virginia. Without any doubt, they are the finest, dearest people we have ever known. We feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to have these several years of friendship. These years will always be very special in our memories.
