DEBRA YVONNE CLARK RAINWATER died Sat., June 18, 2005 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC, of complications from diabetes. What a big empty place we have left in our lives, …that she filled so well until now.
She was loved by many, and will be missed by many, …including her family, and her legion of friends and admirers. I think that everyone who knew her loved her. Her warmth and love for all around her had such a magnetic effect on every person who came under the influence of her considerable charm. All this love and caring came from a woman with a golden heart, …a Godly heart.
And her smile, …what a wonderful smile! She had the kind of smile that could easily light up a room; a smile that was unquestionably genuine, and had the magic quality of bringing out the best in everyone. We’ll all miss that.
Bobby often sang her favorite song ‘Wonderful Tonight’? for her, and Merle Haggard songs too. Their love for each other was obvious to all who were around them.
For over 30 years Debbi and Bobby have been among my very best friends, even though I hadn’t seen them recently. I’ve witnessed their dedication and love for each other, and their children, throughout many trials and hardships. They kidded, and played, and laughed, and cried, …and shared all the highs and lows of life together; they were the Ozzie and Harriet of this generation, …the perfect American couple, in my eyes.
What a joy it was to see these two friends loving and taking care of each other. It made me so proud of them both to see their dedication and ‘staying power’? in action. I envied that, …but could never quite accomplish it myself.
In recent years they’ve both had increasing health problems, but they’ve helped and watched after each other, and taken it in stride. When problems arose, they dealt with them, as we’re all supposed to do.
Now, this week, we’re confronted with the ultimate loss, …half of a life’s partnership is suddenly gone. Debbi had to leave us, for a while. I know that this is part of God’s perfect plan for us, but it’s hard to see it in those terms right now, because the loss and hurt is so overwhelming.
Bobby, Cari, Mandy, and Adam, Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I know that your loss is great, …but the sun will shine again, and a rainbow will soon return. God took Debbi back to Himself for a little while, …but He promised that we’ll see her again, …and He NEVER breaks His word. Someday soon she’ll be waiting for you with arms outreached, in a great Heavenly family reunion. She’ll be so full of love, and laughter, …anxiously waiting for you!
But, until then, she’ll be cheering you on in all that you try to do …from afar; and she’ll always be your biggest fan. Look for her in your dreams, and in your heart, and in flowers, and rainbows, and in the love that you share as her family; …her love is eternal, and will be with you always.
God bless you all. Please let me know if I can do anything for you.
Gary Cody and family.

Deb, this morning WLOS played the commercial for the BBQ festival and both Wade and I made the ‘ugh’ sound of dread. Five years ago you attended that festival and one week later you were gone. No more coffee and talks on the back porch, dancing to the oldies – oh Mickey you’re so fine – me singing off key, football games, picking out pretty things for our houses, camping at KOA and cookouts. I miss you girl. I know you’re in a better place I’m just not sure we are. See you one day soon.
