Denver C. Hawkins, 90, of 84 Elkwood Avenue, Asheville, died Thursday, November 15, 2001, at a local health care facility. Mr. Hawkins was born in Leicester and was a son of the late B.G. and Lilly Snelson Hawkins. He was also preceded in death by a grandson Billy McDevitt. Mr. Hawkins was retired from Cranston Print Works. He is survived by his wife, Zola Mae Edwards Hawkins; four daughters, Jeanette Morgan of Candler, Maxine Ammons of Birmingham, AL, Shirley McDevitt of Greensboro, and Glenda Sawyer of Weaverville; one son, Gary Hawkins of Hickory; one sister, Mae Ratliff of Leicester; one brother, Leonard Hawkins of Candler; six grandchildren Pamela Fortner, Roger Morgan, Douglas Morgan, Steven Ammons, Darrell Sawyer,and Eric Hawkins; and 6 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen L. Autrey and Earl Eskew officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Friday at the funeral home and request that memorials be made to Mountain Area Hospice PO Box 25338 Asheville, NC 28813.
