Dewey Martin Ramsey, aged 96, of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2024. Born on December 30, 1927, in Asheville, NC, he was a cherished son to the late Dewey Lee Ramsey and Bertha Martin Ramsey. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Suzanne Burgess, daughter, Jenny Griffin, and great-grandson, William Greene Jr.
Dewey was a revered figure in his community and a beloved husband to Bertha “Bert” Ramsey, and father to Emily Gibson, Dewey Martin Ramsey, Jr., Penny Grossbeck, and Coley Griffin.
Dewey Ramsey was known for his valor and commitment, having served in the Navy during World War II and later in the Army Reserve during the Korean War until 1978. His military career was marked by dedication and a deep love for his country, which continued through his active involvement in veterans’ organizations.
After his military service, Dewey transitioned to a civilian role as a postal worker, where he continued to serve his community until his retirement. Retirement did not slow him down; instead, it marked the beginning of numerous adventures across the United States with his wife, Bert. Together, they traveled extensively, exploring the country on his beloved Harley, which he rode to 48 states without once trailering it. His passion for motorcycles was evident as he earned the title of “Elder” in the Mechanized Calvary of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, recognized as the oldest rider in the club.
An alumnus of Lee Edwards High School and Cecil’s Business College in Asheville, NC, Dewey was deeply rooted in his educational foundations which propelled him in both his career and personal pursuits. He was a member of Groce United Methodist Church in Asheville, where he participated actively in the community.
Dewey’s hobbies included not only motorcycles but also traveling and enjoying night caps, which he shared with friends and family creating lasting memories. He was a legendary figure, a warrior by nature, and a steadfast friend and family man.
His legacy continues through his wife, children, 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved deeply and who will miss him profoundly.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at The Barn at Paint Fork in Barnardsville, NC, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. A private military burial service will be conducted at a later date.

Dear Bert and family, I thank you for sharing this wonderful man with us! So many times we got to share our Sorority meetings with him because you and Ramsey made us welcome. It was an honor to salute him on Veterans Day a few years back. He was a kind, generous manđź©· We will miss him. Love Joyce Luther-Ball
Dear Mama Bert, I’m sending you all of my love and prayers for healing. You two were a dynamic duo for sure. We will miss him but find comfort in knowing is in a better place and has no more pain❤️
I worked with Bertha at East Harper School in Lenoir. I talked her into joining the Women of the Moose. We went to the Moose convention in Greensboro where I introduced her to Dewey at the dance. I knew Dewey from the Moose and knew he was a great guy. They hit it off that night and ended up getting married. Dewey Ramsey will be missed!
Sending condolences to your family. I am the son of Maxine Martin, daughter of Roy Vernon Martin, his mother Bertha Martin’s oldest brother.
So sorry to hear of Dewey’s (Bud’s) passing. My father was Robert Vance Martin who was one of his mother’s brothers. I was very close to his mother (Aunt Bert).
