Donald Lee Brinkley passed away peacefully on Monday, January 6, 2025, at the age of 84. He was a beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Born to Frank “Otis” Brinkley and Nellie Capps Brinkley in Asheville, NC, on May 4, 1940, Donald grew up in the mountains and always called them home. He was a graduate of Erwin High School and later attended AB-Tech.

Donald led a life of dedication to his country, first as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps for six years, and then as a Postman with the United States Postal Service for 33 years.

In his free time, he enjoyed hiking and fishing in the great outdoors, keeping bees, tending his garden, and volunteering at church. He is remembered by those that knew him for his cheerful disposition, sense of humor, and consistent willingness to lend a helping hand.

Donald is survived by his sister, Geraldine Brinkley Pike; children, Donna (Ron) Pollard and Sam Brinkley; grandchildren, Sarah (Drake) Gordon, Jake Mills, and Grace Mills; and great-grandson, Reinhold Gordon. He is also remembered by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Donald now joins his wife of 50 years, Glenda Pierce Brinkley, in heavenly rest.

The family welcomes friends for a celebration of life at the Patton Avenue location of Groce Funeral Home on Friday, January 17, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Hominy Baptist Church on Saturday, January 18, at 11:00 a.m. Pastors Melissa Hughes and Dr. Paul Raybon will officiate. Interment, with Marine Corps honors, will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Flowers may be sent through Gudger’s Flowers on Haywood Road for those wishing to do so.

  1. Donna and Sam, how lucky we were to move into our first house next door to Don and Glenda. We learned about cooking from your mom and fixing things from your dad. Such generous and fun neighbors. (I still have several 7/16 wrenches, hearing your dad say, “keep that, I have extras”.)
Love to you and RIP to your parents, Elaine

    • Dennis Lee Fowler I remember Donald(duck) well we rode the same school bus. His wife was on our Emma Square Dance Team I have fond memories of both of them. May they rest in peace until we meet again.
