Donald Robert Sluder, 81, of 170 Dix Creek Chapel Road, Asheville, died Friday, December 8, 2006, At St. Joseph Campus. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Joseph Leet and Bertha Brookshire Sluder and was also preceded in death by a brother, James Sluder. A 1942 graduate of West Buncombe High School, he retired in April 1988 from American Enka after 42 years of service. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, he was a humble, hardworking man who never complained. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mamie King Sluder; four daughters, Janice Littrell and husband Johnny of Marshall, Jennifer Lee, Teresa Shipman and husband Jack, Cindy Wise and husband Dennis, all of Leicester; sister, Wilma Sharpe of Leicester; seven grandchildren, Tim Shipman and Alyson, Josh Shipman and Heather, Tonya McMahan and James, Ryan Buckner and Sherri, Scott Lee and Anita, Tracy Lee and Amy Cogdill; six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Madison, Chase, Peyton, Emily and Brenden; two special nephews, Wilbur King and Gerald King; special friend Wayne; and daddy’s little dog Penelope. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Kevin Boone and James Briggs officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm Tuesday prior to the service and request that memorials be made to the American Lung Association, PO Box 2702, Asheville, NC 28802; Enon Baptist Church, 174 Ammons Branch Road, Marshall, NC 28753 or Macedonia Baptist Church, Old #20, Alexander, NC 28701.

  1. Don was an uncle to me, I have alot of good memories of vacations, when we would come down here from Michigan. I remember him being so good and kind to everyone.I know he will be missed.

  2. DON WAS A GREAT UNCLE AND I WILL NEVER FORGET THE FUN TIMES WE HAD AT THE REUNIONS WITH OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS.I HATE TO HEAR OF HIS PASSING.GOD BE WITH THE FAMILY AND GIVE COMFORT AT THIS HOUR.REMEMBER HE IS JUST RESTING NOW AND WE WILL SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN.SHRON WOODY

  6. I remember Donald and Wilma when I was a little girl…I am Billie’s daughter and have many wonderful memories about Granny and Grandpaw and visiting Aunt Bertha and Uncle Leet’s place down in the hollow. I loved that round porch on their house…
