Dora "Dodie" Mae Walker Thompson, 82, of Candler, went to be with her Lord Jesus on July 3, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Davidson County, NC, she was preceded in death by her parents, Hobson Hughes Walker and Vesta Viola Alley Walker; brothers, Hobson Eugene Walker, William Geep Walker and a sister, Barbara Jean Mathews. Dodie graduated in 1947 from Baptist Hospital-Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston Salem. She did her student nursing at the VA Hospital in Asheville where she met her beloved husband, Bill, on a blind date. She did private duty nursing in Florida while raising her family. Following her move back to Asheville, she did industrial nursing at American Enka and Square D. An avid seamstress and upholsterer, she also collected dolls, enjoyed gardening and was an active member of Montmorenci United Methodist Church. But most of all, the joy of her life was her family and friends. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, William "Bill" Thompson; daughters, Nancy Lynn Ledford and husband David of West Asheville, Becky McDevitt and husband Randy of Candler, Patti Farmer and husband Terry of Candler; grandchildren, Heather Ledford, Kristin Farmer, Aaron Farmer, Brandon Ledford, and Otis Dewayne Pearson; three great-grandchildren and several nieces. A special thanks to all of her caregivers over the last couple of months and to Dove Phillips, a special friend who's been there for Dodie and the family. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday at Montmorenci United Methodist Church with the Reverend Frank Gordon and Chaplain Butch Stillwell officiating. Her family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 pm Sunday prior to the service and request that memorials be made to Montmorenci UMC Building Fund, PO Box 610, Candler, NC 28715.

  3. Dodie was much loved and appreciated as our nurse at Square D. Her familys’ loss is shared in part by everyone who was blessed to know her.

  4. I used to work at square D with Dodie. Dodie was a wonderful person! She will be missed. May God comfurt the family.

  5. My Aunt Dodie was my mentor as a child, and advised me in my education as a RN.  As a child and even into my adulthood she always had a beautiful smile and a generousity of love for her family and friends. She will always be remembered by her loving ways, caring, compassion and was always a refined lady to whom I owe the most respect and love. My prayers are with my Uncle Bill, her wonderful daughters, and my extended family. May God’s Love and the happy memories bring you peace and comfort.

  6. I remember working with Dodie at the hospital for the American Enka Company years ago. She was always so happy and friendly. She was such a lady!

  7. Nancy ,

  8. Aunt Dodie was a one of a kind lady! As a child, she was always guiding me. I miss her very much and will rejoice the day I join her and all of the family in His Kingdom. Rest now.
To all my extended family, know I am here for you all. I love you. Goodbye Aunt Dodie, until I see you again.

  9. My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you go through this rough time. Your Mom always had such a sweet spirit about her and an infectous smile. May you find comfort in the days ahead and recall all the wonderful memories as you celebrate her homegoing.

    Love,
    Ginny Berrier

  10. You all have my Sympathy. May The Lord Bless each and every one of you. Dodie was a very nice and sweet person, I worked at Square-D during the time she was there. I loved to go in the nurse station just to talk with her. God has another Sweet Rose up in Heaven

  11. I just learned of her death today while searching the web for her or her family.

Deepest sympathy to all her family.

I only met her once, on a visit to her home. Perhaps two of her daughters were present — I’m not sure it was about 1978.

I’m her husband’s 1st cousin, William B. Thompson and would love to hear from her family. I have a number of pictures of Bill’s father, Maurice Thompson, that you might like, plus some news clippings about him and the genealogy of his ancestry.

Again, sorry to hear of Dodie’s death. She was most gracious and very likable.
