Doris Anne Sasenbury Nicklaw 90, of Fletcher NC, passed away Friday, November 10, 2023.

Doris Anne was born in 1933, in Boonville, New York. She was the daughter of Frank and June (Vincent) Sasenbury.

She spent most of her childhood with her beloved maternal grandparents Carlton and Mabel Vincent and loved to share stories of her childhood.

Doris Anne married the love of her life, the late Robert J. Nicklaw and proceeded to devote her life to family, homemaking and child rearing. She loved to say, “I raised six “only” children!”

Doris was a made from scratch, adventurous “chef”, an excellent seamstress, sewing so many beautiful clothes for the family. She found time and energy to pack up the family and take memory making camping trips and plan sun filled days at Wrightsville Beach. Doris loved acting, modeling, dancing, singing, painting, sketching, sewing, quilting, cookbooks, and being the matriarch!

She was a member of the Quilters by the Sea (Wilmington NC) and Asheville Symphony Chorus (Asheville), and St. Barnabas Church Choir (Arden NC) and member of St. Eugene Parish (Asheville)

Doris and Robert moved from Wilmington NC to Asheville NC in 1986 to build their dream home on land owned in her beloved mountains of WNC. At age 86, rocking on her porch, looking at the mountains full of fall beauty, she said, “I have lived a long and wonderful life.”

She is survived by her four daughters, Kathleen (Tony) Sapp of Swannanoa NC, Sherry Lynn Nicklaw of Fletcher NC, Tracy (John) Kane of Wilmington NC, Michele Nicklaw of Coconut Creek FL, and two sons, Christopher (Rose) Nicklaw of San Diego CA, Jeffrey (Laraine) Nicklaw of Pinehurst NC; and 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Doris is survived by her sister Marge Derusha, brothers Mark Kopach, Tommy Kopach; and James Sasenbury (deceased), Matthew Kopach (deceased)

The family plans a private service under the care of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian and will plan a future Celebration of Life Service.

She was a woman of great faith with a very big heart who loved her family very much and was extremely proud of each one of them. I’m saddened learning of her passing but I will cherish the memories of our time together. I will deeply miss her. I know she is with her beloved Bob who she missed terribly. May she rest in peace.
