Her stories of life during the Great Depression and World War II, and her vivid descriptions of how the nation and their community responded through shared sacrifice, were entrancing and an example for us all. Following college, she entered the U.S. Navy, was commissioned an Ensign and served as a flight communications officer, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. It was at this time that she met her husband, Bruce A. Goewey, a Marine fighter and photo reconnaissance pilot. After the war and child rearing, she taught elementary school for many years, retiring from Hill Elementary School in Austin, Texas. In retirement her energy and positive attitude never ceased to amaze her friends and family. An accomplished artist, she was an active member of the Waterloo Watercolor Society in Austin. She served on many non-profit boards including United Campus Ministry of Austin; USA-USSR Citizens' Dialogue, promoting peace by bringing Americans and Soviets to one another's country; Christmas International House for Austin; the Austin branch of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), where she taught the Family-to-Family program; and PLAN of Texas, a program designed to assist those with mental illness, and their families, plan for present and future needs. She attended Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin for many years, where she served as an Elder and taught adult classes, and New Hope Presbyterian Church in Asheville. Doris moved to Asheville, N.C. in 2006 to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Susanna and Andrew Euston. The five years shared with her, in spite of health challenges, were a joy. She will be missed. Guestbook

  1. Doris’ Family, Shortly after coming to New Hope Church we met Doris at a local Democrat Party function and found out she was an ardent political enthusiast. We enjoyed kidding her about being from Austin, TX near Crawfordville home of George Dubya Bush and she always had a ready answer.

We are never ready in life to lose our loved ones and particularly a Mom. Our Faith in the Sovereignty of God and the manifested concern of caring friends provide the only comfort. Her smile and vibrant personality will be missed in our little community of believers at New Hope Church. Joe & Zunita Clark

  2. We loved Doris, she was such a joy to be around. She always had a smile on her face and a hug for me every Sunday. She will be greatly missed. Our love goes out to you Suzanna, and your family. We are privileged to have known such a fine lady.
