Doris Propst Fastenau, 95, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

A native of Hickory, NC, Doris was the daughter of the late Earl and Macye Moser Propst. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Emmett H. Fastenau, who served as the Pastor at Emmanuel Lutheran Church; and by her siblings, Kenneth, Nell, Martha, and Jack.

Mrs. Fastenau retired from CP&L and remained active with their retiree groups. She was a dedicated member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Her work with the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League was extremely important to her, as was loving and ministering to her church family.

“Dot” was a beautiful, strong, and loving woman. She was an amazing Mom and “Grandmommy in the Mountains.” She always had a beautiful smile on her face and positively impacted so many people’s lives.

She is survived by her daughters, Jackie Walker (Roy) and Julie Fastenau; sons, John Fastenau (Laura), Michael Fastenau (Darlene), Tim Fastenau, and Philip Fastenau (Dana); and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved her dearly and will miss her very much.

Her family will receive friends beginning at noon until approximately 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. The funeral service will then be held at 2:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Skopak will officiate. Burial will follow the church service at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

The family is grateful to Harmony at Reynolds Mountain and Four Seasons for their loving care of Dot and our family.

Words cannot express the blessing and ministry of her church family – thanks so much to Emmanuel Lutheran Church. May God’s richest blessing be granted to the staff, its members and the school for many years to come! Any investment in this church and school is greatly appreciated in memory of her: Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 51 Wilburn Place, Asheville, NC 28806. Grace to all in our Lord Jesus the Christ!

  3. I loved having Dot for a sister in law. Both she and Emmett welcomed me into the Fastenau family with open arms and loving hearts. Their kindness and compassion for others is carried on with their children. Heaven gained an Angel.

  4. Having met Dot later in life was a unique pleasure. The happiness she brought to my Dad, Jack, was wonderful to behold. Thanks to all her family for welcoming him in his time of need. She was a great friend to him. Blessings to all.
