Dorothy Dodd Lawton, 88, retired missionary teacher to China, Thailand, and Taiwan, died Monday, November 16, 1998, at
the WNC Baptist Retirement Home.
Born October 6, 1910, in Tsingtao,
Shantung Province, China, she was the daughter
of the late Dr. Albert B. and Mable Mennie
Dodd, Presbyterian missionaries to China.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60
years, Deaver M. Lawton.
Retiring in 1974, the Lawtons lived in Ridgecrest, where they were members of
Ridgecrest Baptist Church and she was a Sunday School teacher. In recent years, she lived at the Western North Carolina Baptist Home in Asheville.
She earned her B.A. degree from Wheaton College in Illinois and attended Biblical Seminary of New York City for two years.
She was an evangelistic worker at the Illinois State Reform School for Girls from 1930 - 1932. She worked at Neighborhood House in New York City from 1932 to 1933 and founded the Neighborhood House in Greenwich Village, NY, in 1933.
Returning to China at age 23, she was supervisor and teacher at Bridgeman School, Shanghai, for two years. She married Deaver Lawton, missionary preacher in China in 1936, and was appointed by the Southern Baptist International Mission Board the same year.
She and her husband did evangelistic
work in Laichowfu, China, from 1936 - 1940. During World War II while her husband was interned by the Japanese Army in China, she served as a Gray Lady with the American Red
Cross at Moore General Hospital in
North Carolina.
The Lawtons returned to China in 1946
and served in Kweilin. They transferred to Thailand in 1951 and were stationed in
Bangkok and Ayudhya. In 1961 they went to
Taiwan and served in Hsinchu and Keelung.
She is survived by two daughters and
son-in-law, Carol Lawton of Ridgecrest and
Gwen and Floyd M. Cooper of Rena Lara, Miss;
a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel P. and
Dianne F. Lawton of Leesburg, GA; grandsons
Zac and Nic Lawton; two sisters and one
brother.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm
Thursday at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with
the Rev. Glenn Hix officiating. Burial
will be in Ridgecrest Memorial Park.
Her family will receive friends one
hour prior to the service at the church
and requests that memorials be made to the
Lottie Moon Christmas Offering of the International Mission Board.
