Asheville ~ Dorothy Wallin Ray, of Asheville, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2005 unexpectedly in a Hickory Hospital. Mrs. Ray was born in Madison County on April 27, 1918 and was the daughter of the late Hugh E. Wallin and Malona Norton Wallin. She was preceded in death by her husband Odus Ray, in 1977 and her brothers, Carl, Joe, Hugh, Arnold, and Tom; also sisters, Nellie Franklin, Faye Wallin and Rosalee Franklin. Mrs. Ray was a member of the Union Valley Baptist Church of Revere, NC and a graduate of Laurel High School. She was a retiree of the American Enka Corporation with more than thirty years of service. She is survived by her daughters, Dorene Cutshall and husband Chester of Valdese, Shirley Ann Laughter and husband James of Hendersonville; son, Champ Ray and wife Shirley Ann Bullman of Valdese; seven grandchildren, Alan Cutshall, Franklin, Jonathan, Christopher and William (B.J.) Laughter, Karen Wentzel and Steven Ray; five great-grandchildren, Josh, Katlin, Alan (A.J), Alex and Emma; a brother, Steve Wallin and wife Lena of Cornelius, NC and a sister, Vanda Cook of Marshall. A funeral service will be held 2:30 PM Sunday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road with the Rev. Cornelius Adams officiating. Interment will follow in The Words of Life Cemetery on Glenn Bridge Road in Arden. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 1:00- 2:30 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.
