Douglas (Doug) Ashton Young passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Mission Hospital.
Mr. Young was born October 31st, 1929 in Sayre, PA and was the son of the late Wallace Shipman Young and Dorothy Maier Young. He was preceded in death by his 3 brothers, Richard, William and John Young and nephew Gregory C. Young. He was raised in Waverly, NY, then moved to Ithaca where Doug received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cornell University on June 14th, 1951. Doug served in the U.S. Army, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1952.
Love came into his life with his wife of many years, the late Jean Burgoon Young. They lived in Wheaton, IL before moving to East Grand Rapids and then settled for many years in a place truly called home, Washington Island, WI. Doug was Chairman of WA Island for several years where he had an acute sense of appreciation for the great beautiful outdoors. Throughout most of Doug’s life he was employed as a Financial Manager, using his unique skills with analytical numbers and stats.
From here, Jean and Doug made their retirement home in Crowfields, Asheville, NC before moving to their final community at Deerfield Retirement where, with their usual ability to make friends, they enjoyed life to the fullest.
Doug is survived by his three nephews, William J. Young Jr. and wife Cheryl, Douglas C. Young and Ian W. Young. He was also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Leonard “Molly” Young, Great Nieces Sasha Young and Megan Young Carswell and Great nephews Brett Young, Stephen Young and Douglas Young.
Doug’s first and foremost attribute was his compassion for the needs of others. He was recognized by Mission Hospital for over 7000 hours of Volunteer work in different departments at the hospital. Noted especially for his endless work for putting together hundreds of packages for the Mother Baby unit at Mission Hospital which he accomplished at home during COVID-19 at 90 years old.
Doug’s uncanny ability with his people skills made him a friend to all. He was a natural born leader inspiring people to help him always accomplish his goals. Forever giving love and support to those around him.
One can summarize his enjoyment of golf by what he said every time he went to play one of his greatest pastime games, “Thank you Lord for this beautiful day”! He loved to watch sports of all kinds. Doug was a quiet, loyal person, valued by his friends and colleagues for his analytical and sensible conclusions. He had a great sense of humor right up until the end of his life.
