BLACK MOUNTAIN – Douglas Howard Butler, 83, of 200 Tabernacle Road, died Saturday, March 27, 2010. Mr. Butler was born July 31, 1926, in Pittsfield, MA, to the late Donald William and Florence Moore Butler. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Luise Lahmann Butler. They were married in Mrs. Butler's home, Frankfurt Am Main, Germany. They lived for a short time in Pittsfield, MA before moving to Silver Spring, MD, where Mr. Butler attended the American University, majoring in Public Administration. He served in the US Army in Italy, Austria and Germany as Chief Clerk of a regimental personnel office. In 1952, he and Mrs. Butler moved to Asheville and lived in their home at 42 Gladstone Road for 44 years. He was employed by the US Social Security Administration as a claims representative and as a field representative in Asheville, and as a claims supervisor in Morganton and Hendersonville. He was honored to have been selected as one of six employees of the Social Security Administration to go to the Administration's headquarters to work on the draft of the Manual for Field Representatives of the Social Security Administration. He is survived by a brother, Brian Butler and a sister, Mariel Gilligan. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2010 at Highland Farms Retirement Community with the Rev. Don Furness officiating. Private interment will be at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard, Fletcher.
