DOUGLAS "TOM" W. SITTON CANDLER – Douglas "Tom" W. Sitton, 67, of Candler, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Memorial Mission Hospital. A long-time resident of Buncombe County, he retired in 2003 from Norfolk Southern Railroad where he served as an engineer for 38 years, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Division 267. Mr. Sitton was born December 14, 1942 in Bryson City, NC. He was of the Baptist faith and was the son of the late Odis H. and Edna Brown Sitton. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Edith Sitton Camby. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joann Phillips Sitton. Also surviving, a daughter, Kimberly Sitton Burdette and husband Mark Burdette of Harrisburg, NC; a son, Eric Douglas Sitton of High Point, NC; three brothers, Cecil Sitton and wife Rita of Greensboro, NC, Harold Sitton and wife Mary, and Kenneth Sitton and wife Hester of Bryson City, NC; two sisters, Pat Sitton Biggs and husband Maurice of Bryson City, NC, and Carolyn Sitton Rowland and husband John of Asheville, NC; two grandsons, Dillon and Nicholas Burdette of Harrisburg, NC; seven nephews, nine nieces, and many beloved friends. A funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Towe officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation, 4345 Papa Joe Hendrick Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28262.

  3. Joann, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad time. I can think of several times Tom helped me out through the years if I had car trouble when delivering the mail in the ice and snow or just a flat tire. It seemed that I was always in front of or near your house when these things happened and I am so grateful to have known such a caring man.We will also miss his visits to the greenhouses.
