Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Dr. Daniel (Dan) Thomas Eglinton, M.D. (also lovingly known by his patients as Dr. E), 65, of Asheville NC, went to be with the Lord on August 2, 2016. Dan is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Andrea Leigh Eglinton, his mother Cathryn Eglinton, his son Jonathan Jeffrey Eglinton (Mindy) and his daughters Ashleigh Jeanne Stoia (Luke) and Lisa-Caroline Harkins (Peter). Dan was a beloved grandfather to 7 grandchildren, a dear brother, uncle and friend to all.
Dan was born on February 6, 1951 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees Cum Laude from the University of New Mexico where he was a state tennis champion and played D1 Tennis at UNM.
After falling in love with the Blue Ridge Mountains, he moved his young family to Asheville to practice Orthopaedic Medicine and has been serving the Asheville community for over 33 years. Nationally and internationally known, during his career, Dan was Chief of Surgery and Chief of Division Orthopaedics at Mission Hospital where he performed the first Adult Stem Cell Knee Transplant in NC. A leader and member of numerous non-profit boards, clinics and organizations, he was recognized as a published author, speaker and inventor for his pioneering research in adult stem cell therapy and innovative Orthopaedic care. Dr. E's legacy will always be cherished in the patients he loved and cared for throughout his medical career.
A firm believer, in "How Scots Invented the Modern World," he was devoted to the wearing of the kilt for any possible occasion. Dan found great joy being "Papa" to his grandchildren, restoring antiques, woodworking, fly-fishing and eating anything with chocolate in it. His brilliance, deep laugh and infectious humor will be missed by many.
For patients and friends who would like to pay respects, there will be an open house at 172 Asheland Ave, Ste. C on Friday, August 26th from 10 am-12 pm.
A private memorial will be announced at a later date.
The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Regenerative Medicine Fund at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center - a non-profit that funds and promotes adult stem cell therapy research. Checks payable to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Blvd, Winston-Salem, NC 27157, specify Regenerative Medicine or https://campaign.wakehealth.edu/giving/ (Regenerative Medicine)

For Andi and family, we are so sorry for your sudden loss of this fine husband , father and grandfather. Dan was dedicated to his profession, to helping people. He lived a life of service, using the wonderful gift that God gave him. I especially remember his sense of humor! A good man and Christian! How comforting that you all will see him again, but also so sad that you lost him so soon.

I just heard about the tragic loss of Dr. Eglinton and the shock and emotions are swimming. I just finished a college speech on his work and legacy as I am not only a patient but hoped to be under his mentor one day. He was such a passionate Dr. And I admired his vision. It takes a very special and dedicated person to be who he was. His sacrifices mist have been great. I wanted to see him be triumphant to see stem cell therapy become what it could be in his lifetime. My heart is saddened that now that is cut short. I will look for the updated memorial information. My deepest sympathy to all whom loved him. We all must remember his dream and support the advancement of stem cell therapy to the best of our availability. He would want that. He will be missed.
I am so sorry to hear about the death of Dr. Ellington. I worked with him for years at Blue Ridge Bone and Joint and thought he was absolutely wonderful. I loved his sense of humor and his ability to make work fun. I missed him terribly when he changed practices. He was a wonderful man. His patients loved him and so did I. My condolences to his family.

She is now 86 years old now. He always asked about her and would always say tell Mom and the family hello. We would always exit with him saying the words Love ya. With the same words we love you Eglinton Family for sharing such a special person with us. He will be truly missed. My God bless you all.
Our hearts go out to the Eglinton family as we grieve with you for the loss of your beloved husband and father, and our beloved Dr. E. I’m so sorry to hear about Dr. E’s passing.
He was one if the finest!
It was with great sadness that I read of Dr. Eglington’s passing. As my doctor, he always made me smile and feel confident that I was receiving the best care possible. I shall miss him greatly.
Dr. Eglinton was a remarkable Doctor with a huge, warm, caring personality. He saved my mother’s life back in 2004, when he would not give up on her diagnosis & subsequent treatment, while others had misdiagnosed or ignored her. Those days in the hospital were my only encounters with him, but in that amount of time, it was apparent that he cared greatly about his patients. I imagine he lived his life in the same way….with integrity and dignity, and always giving 100%. My condolences and prayers to the family.
So sorry to hear of Dr. Dan’s passing. What an awesome doctor, he has helped so very many. He did my Mom’s knee replacement, Doris Little, she was devastated to hear of his passing and would like to send her condolences also. The few times I was around Dr. Dan let me know he was not only kind and caring but funny and always concerned for the welfare of everyone. Our prayer is for the family that in the days to come you will find strength and comfort. Blessings to you.
My thoughts and prayers are with Dr. E’s family and colleagues. I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked with him when he provided services for the Pediatric Orthopedic Clinic at Thoms Rehab about 25 years ago. So many of my patients have benefited from his surgeries and care over the years. Great loss to our community and of course to his family. May your memories bring you peace and comfort and may he rest in peace.
I am SO sorry for your great loss. Dr. Dan was kind enough to phone me after reading my MRI. (Tho I live in Dallas TX. I clung to every word.because he talked so much about the Lord Jesus. How refreshing ! He really left his mark on this world. His mother-in-law, Jeanne Arnold , and I have been friends for over 30 years . The Lord bless and keep each one of you .
Dr. Eglinton will be tremendously missed. I’m so grateful to have met him after another doctor read my MRI and said there was absolutely nothing that could be done about my terribly ripped Achilles tendon. Then he thought for a moment before adding, ‘Unless Dr. Eglinton can save it with stem cell therapy.’? My husband and I were enormously impressed from the moment we met Dr. E. Thanks to him I can now hike mountains, dance the tango and enjoy my life to the fullest. His genius convinced my husband and me that stem cell therapy is a true miracle. I’m sorry for his family’s great loss.

Dr. E. has been my Dr. friend and christain brother for more years than I can remember. My last visit with him was the Monday before his passing. He did not seem to feel well. However his care for me and all of his patients was always there and at the end of my visit . He said as always God bless you and I love you. It is sill hard to believe he is gone. I am having avery hard time selecting another Dr. There will never be another Dr. E Rest in peace with your Father in heaven.Comfort to his staff and family.

Dr. Englinton was a total inspiration and rare mind in a vast sea of unremarkable thinkers. Courageous. Kind. Noble. Responsible. Loving. True to the pure calling of his profession and the desire to help people. He was an ally to all of us who have to choose to fight for a regenerative path in the face of overwhelming traditional thinking. When doubting he reminded me that: first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they hate you, then you win… I keep those words and other quotes of his in all my bone notebooks from days battling AVN. He was a champion, a true teacher, and a brave soul who will be deeply missed.
I learn of the loss of Dan at my 50th High School Reunion in Albuquerque from Bill Tracy. I am so sorry that we lost Coo Coo Cah Shoo the ‘Egg Man’ as his fellow residents at U of New Mexico called him! He was a brilliant, vibrant, earnest, hard working fellow Orthopaedist who was always good for his word! It was great having him in the trenches. My late condolences to his friends and family! A Great Man!
Dr. Eglinton repaired my broken ankle when I fell in ’98 and removed the internal hardware 1 year late. It’s been a long time but he was always warm & friendly. Sending up a prayer for the doctor & condolences to his family.
