Earl W. Medford, 79, son of Talmadge and Bertie Smathers Medford of Candler, died Saturday, February 10, 2001, in Port Charlotte, FL.

Mr. Medford was an Army veteran of WW II, serving with the “Big Red One”, the famed First Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Invasion Arrowhead, three Campaign Stars, Presidential Unit Citation, and Normandy, Belgium, and Netherlands Medals. He was a member of the VFW and of Liberty Baptist Church and was retired from Champion Papers after 42 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Vivian Morgan Medford; three sons, Bruce Medford and his wife Ann of Bryson City, Ray Medford of Davie, FL, and Ron Medford of Twin Bridges, MT; two sisters, Ruth Moore of Candler and Mildred Robinson of Asheville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm Thursday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene King officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

His family will receive friends from 7 - 9 pm Wednesday at the funeral home and request that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Liberty Baptist Church Building Fund.
