Edgar W. "Bill" Shepherd, 74, of 35 Holbrook Road, Candler, formerly of Barnardsville, departed this life Friday, September 7, 2012, at the John F. Keever Solace Center. Bill was born in Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Edgar W. and Era Gilliland Shepherd, of Democrat. He was a lifelong grocery man, working 45 years in the business. Bill's career began with A&P Grocery Stores before moving to Ingles Markets. Bill retired in 2002 while working in Burnsville. A Marine Corp veteran, one of his most proud accomplishments was serving his country in the late 50's. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret O'Donnell Shepherd; a son, Tommy Shepherd and wife, Robin; two daughters, Melissa Banks and husband, Tim, and Melinda Edwards and husband, Rusty; grandchildren, Nicholas Banks, Thomas Shepherd, Natalie Morgan, Amanda Kemp, Clint Shepherd, Lukas Edwards, Joshua Edwards, and Madison Edwards; great-grandchildren, Camryn Shepherd, Jackson Banks, Avery Kemp and Elijah Kemp; step-great-grandchildren, Avery Morgan and Mackenzie Morgan; a sister, Barbara Rainwater and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Kylie Anne Shepherd and a sister, Betty S. Shuford. A memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Derrick Whitson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and at other times will be at the residence. Memorials may be made to the John F. Bill and I were close friends thru high schools and we lost touch in recent years.I know he has a beautiful family children and grandchildren,Bill and I had a chance to visit about two years ago at my old homeplace. TYhat visit will always be my close memory of Bill. He had mellowed a great deal and I treasure that visit’My sincere sympathy to Margaret and Bill*s family.
