Born in: Buncombe Co., NC
Resided in: Creedmoor, NC

Edith Gregg Meece passed away on Monday, May 23, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.

Edith was born in Leicester, Buncombe County, on February 2, 1937, to the late James Elijah and Vever King Gregg. She remained in Leicester during her childhood where she was a loving sister and daughter. Edith and Arvel met at a church function and were later married on December 30, 1953.

Edith was a kind, gentle woman who never met a stranger. Although she occasionally worked in retail, most of her life was spent as a homemaker. Of all her roles throughout her 85 years on this side of heaven the one she excelled in the most was that of “Nana.” She cared for and mothered every child who she came in contact with, biological or not. Most of her grandchildren and even some of her great-grandchildren spent their early days with her as their parents went back to work. Nana was always there to give advice when asked, never overstepping, and always offering words of encouragement. She would share her experiences and even her failures in parenthood in order to support others. She enjoyed crocheting, baking, and gardening in her free time. She loved her clocks and watching and feeding her hummingbirds. Even though our hearts are broken here on earth we rejoice in knowing that she was received in the loving arms of our Savior, Papa, Tim, Glenna, Murphy and all her loved ones who have passed before her.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Arvel Leonard Meece; beloved daughter, Glenna Meece Howell, and son, Timothy Leroy Meece; a granddaughter; her parents and her sisters.

Survivors include her children, Barbara Meece Eason and husband Steve, of Clayton, NC; Kathy Meece Lashley and husband Thomas, of Creedmoor, NC; Terry Leonard Meece and wife Michele, of Bahama, NC; grandchildren, Hunter “Chad” Barnette, Jennifer Eason Myers, Natasha Meece Allen, Steven “Scott” Eason, April Elizabeth Eason, Timothy Denton Meece, Megan Nicole Meece, Joshua Heath Meece, Jason Turner Murphy, Johnathan Zackary Howell, Tiffany Meece Neville, Jessica Meece Biggs and Jarret David Lashley; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Frank Gregg, Jimmy Gregg, Johnny Gregg, Dale Gregg and Ellen Shook; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Groce Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends and family beginning at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Mount Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Arvel and Edith were neighbors of my family in the early 60’s. At that time I was in High School. Such a special couple. We lost touch when the Meeces moved away from the Leicester Area. I had seen the Obituary for Arvel and wondered how Edith was doing. I lost my Dad in 2006 and my dear Mother just this February. I know the sadness her loss brings to all of you. Love and take care of each other. I know your Mom, Grandmother and Great Grandmother would want you to. My heart goes out to all of you.

  2. We will miss our sweet neighbor❣️ She is walking the streets of gold with Jesus and her loved ones that went before her.

  3. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family as you lay your love one to rest. We pray that the sweet memories of her will over power the loss that you feel.

May the Holy Spirit be your comforter.

  4. Our World is a little less bright without Aunt Edith. Thoughts and Prayers to all my cousins. Love ya’s.
