Edith Agnes Pittillo, 93, died Monday, July 2, 2007, at the Brooks-Howell Home, after several years of declining health. Miss Pittillo was born September 12, 1913, in Fairview and lived there most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Agnes Vandelia Williams Pittillo. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Raleigh Cogburn, Sue Sheets and Helen Trantham and brothers, John Pittillo and Thomas Benjamin (Jim) Pittillo. Edith graduated from Fairview High School and attended the Asheville Normal College. She taught third graders for 41 years in two Buncombe County Schools, first at Fairview and later at Valley Springs. She was a member of the NEA, the NCEA. She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. At the time of her death she was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. Edith never married and lived with her parents and cared for them until they passed away. Except for short times when she was away at college and on vacations, she lived in the house her father built on Cane Creek Road in 1910. She continued to live there alone after her parents died until she moved to Brooks-Howell Home in 2005. She lived her life to do good things and to help others. She knew how to get children to respond in a positive way and make them feel good about themselves. She did many good things for her nieces, nephews, and other relatives as well as for many family friends and neighbors. She was especially kind and thoughtful to the elderly. She will long be remembered as a good teacher and as a kind and thoughtful person. A graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Glenda Bramlett officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edith?s memory may be made to the Memorial Fund of Fairview-Sharon United Methodist Church, c/o Jean Fink, 572 Old Fort Road, Fairview, NC 28730, or to CarePartners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813. 1. Dear Family of Ms. Pitillo,
I was saddened to hear of Ms. Pitillo’s passing. I was a student of hers at Fairview Elementary in 1972 when I was in 2nd grade. I remember her bringing in that blue thermos filled with coffee and those skirts with big pockets that she fondly said she was going to put all of us in and take home with her. She was a wonderful teacher. May God be close to your family during this time.
    Sincerely,
    Laura Bassett Parker

  2. Dear Ones:
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Mrs Pittillo, yes she was never Edith to me. was my teacher and later a frind but I guess out of respect I could never call here Edith. She is also the last of many excellent teachers at Fairview who helped install in me the values that have rulled my life. She and they are sorley missed.
God bless all of you loved ones of her’s. Marvin for the Wn Glenn Ledbetter Family

  3. Miss Pittillo was my 3rd grade teacher at Valley Springs School in 1958. At that time the school included grades 1 to 12. The old school building has long been demolished, but the memory of fine teachers like Miss Pittillo will always be among my fondest memories.
