Edward Frederick Getbehead, 87, of 106 Forest Knoll Place, Weaverville, died Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at a local hospital. A native of Rome, NY, he was the son of the late Edward C. Getbehead and Emma H. Getbehead. He retired in 1982 from Revere Copper and Brass Inc. of Rome, NY as Assistant Corporate Controller after 49 years of service. Ed and his wife moved to Delray Beach, FL in 1984, Indian Trail, NC in 1995 and Weaverville, NC in 2000. Ed was married to Mabel Jacobus in March of 1939 at the First Baptist Church in Rome, NY. A 1933 graduate of Rome Free Academy, Mr. Getbehead began work at Revere immediately after graduation as a clerk in the accounting Department. After completeing advanced course work in accounting, he was appointed assistant treasurer of the Rome Division of Revere. In 1965 he was appointed to Treasurer and again in 1969 he was selected to be Controller of the Rome Division. In 1974 he was appointed as Assistant Corporate Controller. Ed was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rome, NY, where he served as a trustee, elder, treasurer and president of the congregation. He was a lifetime member of the National Association of Accountants. He also served as treasurer of the Tuegega Country Club and the Rome Club. His service also included tenure as chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and membership in the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Stanwix Hose Company and the Rome Elks Lodge #96. Mr. Getbehead is survived by his wife, Mabel J. Getbehead; a daughter, Helen G. Janisko and her husband David A. of Weaverville, NC; a son, Jon A. Getbehead and his wife Ruth E. of Wynantskill, NY; a sister, Margaret Granger of Rome, NY; two brothers, Franklyn Getbehead and his wife Thelma of Rome, NY and Louis Getbehead and his wife Beverly of Stuart, FL; seven grandchildren, Cheryl J. Conradt-Eberlin and her husband the Rev. Paul of Glen Allen, VA, Debra J. Tonnesen and her husband the Rev. Philip of Salisbury, NC, Dr. Lisa J. Becton and her husband Gordon of Harris, MO, Christopher D. Janisko of the US Coast Guard, New Orleans, LA, Jon A. Getbehead, Jeffrey P. Getbehead and Jessie L. Getbehead all of Wynantskill, NY and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Asheville, NC with the Reverend Mark Nieting officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rome, NY or to Emmanuel Lutheran School, 51 Wilburn Place, Asheville, NC 28806.

  1. I am very sorry to hear about your husband/father. I was one of the nurses who took care of him at Memorial Mission Hospital. I remember what a great sense of humor he had. I also remember the overwhelming feeling of love I felt in his hospital room. I will be praying for your family.
