Edward Sherwood Pinkston

Edward S. (Sherwood) Pinkston Sr. passed away at home on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. He was born in Asheville, NC on September 5, 1924 to Charles R. Pinkston and Kathleen Armstrong Pinkston. Sherwood grew up during the Depression in a loving home with his two brothers Buck (deceased) and Joe of Miami Lakes, FL and five sisters Kathleen McDonald, Dorothy Dysart, Margaret Reid, Ann Pinkston (all deceased) and Mary Rezzuto of Atlanta, GA. Sherwood was a graduate of Lee Edwards High School. Part of the Greatest Generation, he cherished his memories of serving his country. He was in the Navy in World War II volunteering for the newly formed Beach Battalion which served in pre-invasion landing parties that scouted out Japanese held beaches in the South Pacific. He was a great storyteller who could almost make you feel like you had been in enemy territory right along with him. Even though Sherwood was a successful businessman, to his family, friends and employees, he will always be remembered for his kind, generous heart and gentle, loving nature. The greatest legacy Sherwood left for his family are the many memories of a man who always sought out and found the best in everyone. Sherwood never met a stranger, and was just as apt to help someone he had never met before as he was to help out a family member. He loved to travel and made many ski, golf and beach trips with various family members – times that are cherished by all. Sherwood was an entrepreneur who founded many successful businesses. His avid love of golf served him well and in the late 1960's, he founded Golf Associates Scorecard Company. Working out of the back of his dry cleaning business, his first client was Black Mountain Golf Course. He pursued his dream until Golf Associates became the world's largest producer of golf scorecards and he continued as President coming into work every day. He was a loving husband and father for 65 years to Faye Pinkston, his surviving spouse, and to his sons, Edward S. Pinkston, Jr., Michael Pinkston, Ralph Pinkston and Joseph Pinkston (deceased). Sherwood is survived by 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one brother–in-law, Gene Rezzuto of Atlanta. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday June 30 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church in Asheville, NC. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church Fund, 60 Church St., Asheville, NC 28801. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. It is with deep sorrow that I received the news of my good friend Sherwood passing. He has been a part of my life since I was 6 years old when we were neighbors in the West Terrace Apts.
I will miss him and always remember the good times we shared .
Faye and the boys and to all the family , may God wrap his loving arms around you and provide that promised peace that surpasses our understanding.
    Leslie and Robin Johnson

  2. So sad to learn of Sherwood’s passing. To Faye and family, I am thinking of you with a happy memory of talking with Sherwood at Margaret Fort’s birthday party several years ago.
    Marita Cannon Gates
    (Lib’s daughter)

  3. Dear Faye, I am so sorry to hear of Sherwood’s passing. I was so grateful that Sherwood came and visited Paul before he died. I loved to listen to both of them talking about playing baseball as boys. May Sherwood rest in eternal peace and light perpetual shine upon him. May God hold you and your family in his loving arms.

  4. Sometimes gentle words can do so much to soften
the intense sadness when a dear loved one dies. God’s word acknowledges that
our heart can be broken and crushed.’ (Ps. 51:17). But even in
severe situations, God can bring relief to a stricken heart if we pray to him
in full faith and observe his commandments. May the God of comfort soothe your
families aching hearts as the days progress.

  5. Mrs. Pinkston, I heard of Sherwood long before I had the pleasure of meeting him (or you) and admired his work and business from afar for many years. It was confirmed and solidified when we sat down and talked a couple of years ago. I have thought of you both many times since then and kept up a little bit through friends at Biltmore Forest CC and Mac. I sincerely mourn your loss, and you will be in my thoughts and prayers in the days to come. John Garrison, Knoxville, Tennessee jhn_garrison@yahoo.com

  6. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family as they deal with this great loss.

  7. Charles and frances christy hensley…we werer so sorry to hear about Sherwoods passing. We have known him all of our lives.Just wanted his family to know that we are sadden for your loss..your family will be in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

  8. Condolences to all of Sherwoods family in your loss. We celebrate his great accomplishments and I enjoyed golf with him and Mike and Ralph since Beaver Lake days. I remember Sherwoods 37 on the front at Muni the last time we played.

  9. Our sincerest condolences to Faye, Mike, Eddie, Ralph and the extended Pinkston family. Sherwood was such a hoot to be around, with never a dull moment. What an outstanding memory and wit he possessed! Our last round of golf together once again showcased his marvelous putting. Although we will be unable to attend, our prayers and thoughts will be with you. I’m sure there will be the Lord’s version of ‘money holes’ for him to secure.

  10. Reading the comments here by those who knew Sherwood are all so true. No one
who knew him will ever forget him. I worked for 14 years at Golf
Associates, and during that time I became aware of the many, many
unselfish deeds that Sherwood and his wife, Faye, both did for
others…some for people that they never knew personally. He knew how to
brighten up a room and create a captive audience when he told a story,
usually about his service during the war, or a golf story. My wish for
Faye and their family is that their future years will always bring them
all of the wonderful memories that Sherwood was unselfishly responsible
for making. May God comfort and richly bless all of his family.

  11. I worked for Mr. and Mrs. Pinkston as a sign painter at Golf Associates for almost three years in the early 1990’s, and I can say with certainty that he will always be one of my favorite bosses. He was so kind, generous, and funny. I am so glad I got to know him, and I pray for comfort and fond memories to sustain her and the rest of their family.

  12. I just learned of Sherwood’s passing. Prayers to Faye and the family… many great memories. RIP Pinky.

  13. Dear Pinkston family,
My prayers are with . A wonderful man will be missed. I knew nothing of Mr. Limestone brave work in World War Two. What a hero. He was a good friend of my father and a friendly face during my teenage years. I would have loved to hear his stories.
