Asheville ~ Eleanor Griffith Benbow, 80, of Givens Estates died Sunday, April 14, 2002.

A native of Forsyth Co., Mrs. Benbow was the daughter of the late Lillie Myers Griffith and James J. Griffith and the wife of the late Jack H. Benbow, who died May 8, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Fannie Sue Griffith.

Mrs. Benbow retired as an adult education teacher from Southeastern Community College and was a member of Biltmore United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, David C. Benbow and his wife, Phyllis of Asheville, Joseph J. Benbow of Wrightsville Beach, NC and Kenneth M. Benbow and his wife, Ann of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Heather Efird and her husband, Steve of Hemby Bridge,NC, Sumer Benbow and Courtney Benbow of Albemarle, Shaun Benbow of Morganton and Lindsay Benbow of Asheville; two step-grandchildren, Scott and David Tolliver of Charlotte; one sister, Frances Foreman of Prattville, AL; and two brothers, James J. Griffith of Kingsport, TN and David W. Griffith of Kernersville, NC.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 PM at Biltmore United Methodist Church with Revs. Ashley Crowder-Stanley and Joe Fulk officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

  1. I would like to convey my condolences to the family. I worked with Mrs. Benbow in the PIC lab while a student at SCC and later worked with Mr. Benbow when I was employed by Whiteville Apparel. I enjoyed knowing both of them.
