Eloise Gentry Lanford, 82, of 164 Dorchester Avenue, Asheville, died Sunday, August 4, 2002, in an Asheville hospital. Mrs. Lanford was born in Buncombe County and was a daughter of the late Martin L. and Maude Braman Gentry. She was retired from the National Climatic Weather Service and was formerly employed with the Buncombe County Tax Office. She was a 54-year member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was active with the Children’s Sunday School, the Children’s Vacation Bible School, the WMU and was a member of the Golden Handbells of Calvary. She is survived by her husband, Frank J. Lanford; a daughter, Ella Thompson and her husband Charles of Mills River; a son, Joe Lanford and his wife Jane of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Grace Notaro and Iris Strawn of Charlotte and Marjorie Britton of Pittsburgh, PA; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Buddy Corbin officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and at other times will be at the home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Calvary Baptist Church, 531 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of the arrangements.
