Mrs. McKinney was born June 27, 1900, in Troop, TX, and was a daughter of the late Frazier and Nancy Margaret Williams Chastain. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Dwight McKinney in 1975, and by a daughter, Rosemary McKinney, in 1930.
She was a graduate of Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntersville, TX, and taught schools in Texas and Virginia. More recently she taught in Asheville at Biltmore Elementary and Charles C. Bell schools. She was also a former employee of Bon Marche Department Store.
She played the washboard as a member of “The Unbelievables Band” of the Young-at-Heart Group of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the teachers sorority, Kappa Kappa Iota and was Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter 228. She was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Oak Hill United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Newton C. and Sarah McKinney of Asheville; two grandsons, Jim McKinney of Asheville and Phil McKinney and his wife Charlene of Clover, SC; two great-grandchildren, Chris and Meghann McKinney of Clover, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday at Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Norman A. Hubbard officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Her family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
