LQ member, Emagene Peek, known for her love of making philanthropy quilts, died in her sleep on April 29.
In later years, she also quilted with her two nieces, Carolyn Cole and Beth Woody, both former LQ members.
She was the oldest of 10 children and the daughter of a quilter, growing up in Sandy Mush, NC west of Asheville. She also lived in Texas and Alabama before moving to this area when her husband Willis was transferred. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse, including time at Mary Black Hospital.
The club honored Emagene at its October 2017 meeting with a quilt block to hang in her sewing room. This recognized her making and contributing more than 200 philanthropy quilts over the previous five years.
According to her nieces, Emagene also made coats, skirts and even knife cases which she told them she sewed “by the thousands.” She sold these at trade shows around the country which she attended with her husband.
She is survived by her husband, two stepsons and several nieces and nephews.
Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road assisted the family.
We are sorry to hear of your loss. We lived near your Mom- she was wonderful and so was your Dad.
