Emily Jane Love Rhodes, 93, wife of the late Dr. Lawrence Rhodes, was promoted on April 28, 2021 to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

She was born August 18, 1927 to the late Robert Bradley Love and Lilly Margaret Clayton. She had five brothers and sisters; Ervin, Nora, Bob, Opal and Carroll.

Emily served as a pastor’s wife at Hoopers Creek Baptist Church for over 47 years. She was known for her delicious cooking, fervent prayers, kindness towards others and Sunday School teaching. Her life served as a magnification of service to the Lord Jesus Christ. She was faithful to the gospel ministry and sang gospel music with her family; The Rhodes Trio.

Emily could heal any wound with Neosporin and a kiss. She collected Precious Moment figurines, but mainly collected “precious moments” with friends and family.

She is best known for her banana pudding and home cooked meals. You could never leave her house hungry or thirsty. She always ensured that guests had a cup of coffee and a slice of freshly baked cake in exchange for fellowship.

The recipe of advice that she leaves behind to friends and family is to “Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” – Matthew 22:37

Her children are “a heritage of the Lord”. They include son Larry Rhodes and wife Faye, daughter Rachel and husband Roland Barnwell and daughter Mary and husband Danny Youngblood. Grandchildren include the late Jeff Rhodes, Michelle Barnwell, Chris and his wife Teara Barnwell, Pastor Phillip Youngblood and wife Shasha Youngblood, Amy Youngblood and eight great grandchildren: Cassidy, Gracie, Zachary, Colten, Easton, Declan, Divinity and Regial.

Homegoing Services will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Hoopers Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM. Burial will follow the service in the new Hoopers Creek Cemetery.

  1. Miss Emily will be greatly missed by everyone for her sweet and welcoming personality.

  2. Mrs. Emily was, My Church Mother; My Prayer warrior; My Friend; One of the greatest examples of a Proverbs 31 Lady; So full of fun and good laughs; I was blessed to make a trip to Israel with Mrs. Emily and Rev Rhodes, and visit their home where they always had the welcome matt rolled out. Had great time spending days with her for a week while some of the Family was on Vacation. She will be missed so much. Much Love and Sympathy to all the Rhodes and Youngblood Family who Loved her dearly and gave her such excellent care.

  3. Emily was the truest example of showing God’s love and kindness… Getting to know her was almost like the anticipation of maybe opening a whole lot of presents and the surprise in each one would be better than the last and you just couldn’t wait until you got to see her again and see what kind of blessing she would surprise you with ♥️ Lots of love and prayers to all ♥️♥️♥️

  4. Our heartfelt sympathy and love to the Rhodes family. Ms. Emily never wanted any praise for herself but she did praise God continually for salvation and all of God’s blessings to her. The family and friends and Hoopers Creek Baptist church have lost another prayer warrior. Precious memories flood our soul and mind. Our hope is in Christ for the great resurrection day.

  5. Emily was such a sweet lady. We’re going to miss her in church and we will miss those annual Christmas Cards that she always sent us. Our loss is Heavens gain. Glad she is reunited with Lawrence. What a time they must be having. Praying for all of the family.

  6. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family. I have such precious memories of staying with Mary after Sunday church services. Ms. Emily was always such a sweet and fun person. I also had many Sunday School days sitting under her teaching. She was always willing to listen and explain to us. Just hold on to those precious memories of her and your daddy, they will bring joy in the darkest times. Praying for you all.

  7. May God comfort you all and Bless you, Ms. Emily was always sweet to our family and I appreciate her going to visit our Mama when she was in hospice care. She was always such an inspiration to all of us girls growing up. I use to sit by her in the choir at church. We had some wonderful times worshiping together. We’ve always loved her and Preacher Lawerence. Love to all her family. Don and Dianna Birchfield & family
