Ethel Caldwell Norvell, 94, formerly of West Oakview Road, Asheville, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, in Hampton, VA.
Mrs. Norvell was born in 1908 on Jonathan’s Creek in Haywood County and was the oldest child of the late Jerry and Dare Leatherwood Caldwell. She moved with her family to Buncombe County at the age of six and graduated from Sand Hill High School in 1929. In 1931 she married Roger Norvell (who died in 1993) and lived in the Sand Hill Community for 80 years. She was a member of Oak Forest Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law Glenn D. and Ann Norvell of Marietta, GA; her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Phipps-Lund and the Rev. Richard Lund of Hampton, VA; her sister Clara Baker of Burlington, NC; five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Thursday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the rev. Richard Lund officiating. Burial will be at Oak Forest Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and suggest that memorials be made to Oak Forest Presbyterian Church, 880 Sand Hill Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

An E-mail seems like a very impersonal way to send condolences, but I didn’t know how else to contact you. I remember Aunt Ethel and Uncle Roger as being very warm and down to earth people. I’m sorry to hear about her passing.
