Ethel Hester Hightower McMahan, 101, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025.
A native of Haywood Co., Ethel was the daughter of the late Alfred and Hester Hightower. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Edward McMahan; three sisters; four brothers; sons-in-law, Tony Taylor and Donald Pressley; and grandchild, James Edward Brigman.
Mrs. McMahan worked for many years at Joyner’s Grocery, Fortune’s Hardware, Gordan’s Furniture, and Avondale Knitting Mills. She also babysat for over 15 children and was involved in many school activities. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was also a member of Edgewood Baptist Church for 75 years, where she taught multiple Sunday school and Bible school classes.
She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Taylor and Elizabeth Ann Pressley; son, William Edward “Bud” McMahan, Jr. (Kathy); sister, Edith Payne; brother, J.T. Hightower; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Roger Rearden will officiate. Burial will then take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
