Eugene C. Blankenship, Sr., 93, of Asheville, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at his residence. Mr. Blankenship was born March 10, 1924 in Weaverville to the late Clyde and Margaret Blankenship. Gene founded Blankenship Electric Company and spent 24 years as owner until his retirement. He served three years in the US Army, WWII, campaigning in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe as a surgical technician and was honorably discharged. Gene is preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Blankenship; daughter, Kimberly Blankenship; son, Gene Blankenship, Jr. (Suzanne); granddaughter, Devin; grandson, Clay; great grandson, Brent, and several nephews and nieces. Gene was a member of Swannanoa First Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 1st in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with the Dr. Jeff Dowdy officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 30th from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road.

  5. Was Gene in any way related to Oscar and Carl Blankenship of Asheville and Fairview? They were born in the 1890s. Oscar was my grandfather and his wife was Margaret Whittemore of Barnardsville. My sincere sympathy in your loss.
