Evan Javan Brown, Jr.

He was also a birthright potter. He was the sixth generation of Brown potters in America, who came from England in 1741. He worked alongside his father and uncles at pottery shops around the Southeast from the time he could walk. He accepted a transfer to the Asheville airport in the 1950’s, built a house for his wife and children and began building his own pottery. He sold his first pot from it in 1964, and it operates today under the management of his daughter, Cherry Brown Corn. Evan is the son of the late Evan Javan and Madeline Callahan Brown.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mercedes Lilly Brown, sisters Sarah Moore of Atlanta and Virginia Yancey of Connelly Springs, daughter Cherry Corn of Arden, daughter Connie Gardi of Swannanoa, son Richard Brown of Atlanta and daughter Cynthia LaChapelle and husband Carl of Cary. He is also survived by seven grandchildren – Pamela Cook and husband Robert of Arden, Andrea Trotter and husband Tim of Arden, Michele Dubay and husband Brian of Cary, Angela Elder and husband John of Charlotte, Nanette Corn of Greensboro, and Scott and Catherine LaChapelle of Cary. He also has two great-grand children – Morgan Elder and Josie Trotter.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at Long Shoals Baptist Church at 11:00 am. Visitation will be immediately beforehand at 10:00.
