Evelyn H. Worley, 90, died peacefully Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at Highland Farms Retirement Community.
Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, she was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn R. Haste and Elsie Berger Haste, and her husband, Charles Edwin Worley. She is survived by her sons, Charles R. Worley (Nancy) and David G. Worley (Dianne), both of Asheville, and her grandchildren, Charles Alan Worley (Jamie) of Bradenton, Florida, and Megan W. Coaplen (Caleb) of Asheville, and her great grandson, Everett R. Coaplen. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret H. Counts, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and brother, Glenn R. Haste, Jr. (Betty) of Maryville, Tennessee, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She attended New Mexico State University, and worked during World War II as a secretary in Albuquerque assisting with the top secret Manhattan project and the creation of the Los Alamos research facility. She was married in 1943, and moved to Asheville to raise her family. She later worked as a legal secretary for the Parker, McGuire, & Baley Law firm (later McGuire, Wood) and for her son Charles' law firm.
She was a long time member of the West Asheville Presbyterian Church, where she participated in the choir, Women of the Church, and assisted in youth programs. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, and travel, and spent many years in the Good Sams Club traveling by RV. She was an enthusiastic bridge player, and enjoyed hosting many social events and outings.
The family is especially grateful for the loving care provided by the staff at Highland Farms during her more than 12 years of residency there.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 7th at the West Asheville Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the West Asheville Presbyterian Church, 690 Haywood Rd., Asheville, NC 28806.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.
