Asheville ~ Foy McMahan Lance, 89, of Arbor Terrace, died Monday, May 5, 2003 in Park Ridge Hospital. A native of Yancey County, Mrs. Lance had been a resident of Buncombe County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Minnie Allen McMahan and wife of the late Gilbert G. Lance, who died in 1977. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ada Fox and five brothers, Vernon, Carmen, Clyde, Cleve and Claude McMahan. Mrs. Lance was a homemaker. She was the last surviving charter member of Buena Vista Baptist Church which is now South Asheville Baptist Church. She taught all ages of Sunday School and was president of Womens Missionary Union and taught Sunday School for the outreach program at a local nursing home. Survivors include a daughter, Gladys Lance and her husband, Ray Carter of Asheville and a son, David Lance of Arden. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road with Rev. James Sams officiating. Interment will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff and residents of Arbor Terrace for her care and many friendships and also to the staff at Universal Health Care.

    I’m so very sorry to hear about your mother’s passing and I hope you’re doing OK. I wanted to let you know how much I admire you for all the time and attention you gave to your mother. I know it was very hard for you to keep going, especially when your mother’s physical and mental health became so fragile. I hope I have the strength and stamina that you did if I’m ever in that situation.

  3. Gladys, I am so sorry about your mom. We had talked with each other at Universal about our mom’s. God does take care of our needs, and I know Heaven has gained a wonderful Lady.Shirley Fore Arrowood.

  5. mrs lance was a very nice person she was always glad to see me when i went to viset. I loved her alot and i am going to miss her.
