Frances Dewey Griffith

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Stuart and Irma Buck Dewey. She graduated from Michigan State University, where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and received her Master’s Degree in Education from American University, Washington, DC, in 1961.

Frances was a teacher in Montgomery County, Maryland from 1947 until 1966 and moved to Asheville in 1966. She taught at Cecil’s Business College from 1967 until 1980 and was President of the Western North Carolina Chapter of the Federation of Republican Women from 1974 until 1979. She worked as a tutor for the Literacy Council of Buncombe County from 1985 until 1993.

She is survived by four daughters, Lynn Daniel and Joyce Howell of Asheville, Ann Simpson of Ormond Beach, Fla. and Patricia Pankey of Thomasville, Georgia; her sister, Ruth Meade of Sterling, Virginia, her brother, John Dewey of Minocqua, Wisc.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.
