Gay S. Snelson, 75, of 2448 New Leicester Highway, Asheville, died Thursday, October 4, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Snelson was born October 19, 1925, to the late David M. and Nannie Plemmons Snelson. He was an auctioneer and land developer since the age of 16 and was the owner of of Snelson Farms which has been in the family for many generations.

He was very active in the Democrat Party and was Leicester Precinct Chairman for many years. He was a member of the Buncombe County Planning Board and was a member of Leicester United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Anders Snelson; three children, Linda S. Waldron and her husband Andrew of Clearwater, FL, Nan S. Rountree and her husband Marcus of Memphis, TN, and Bruce Snelson and his wife Brenda; four grandchildren, Alan and Devon Rountree and Adam and Mark Snelson; one brother, Mitch Snelson and his wife Aline of Leicester, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm Sunday at Newfound Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Phillips and Ralph Sexton, Jr. officiating. Private burial will be in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, or to one’s favorite charity.

  14. I knew Mr. Snelson as he and Bruce have done the auctions for the City of Asheville for many years. We at the City were very sorry to learn of his death and send our sincerest condolences to the Snelson family.
