G.D. Smith, Jr., 82, of Fairview, passed away Monday, December 3, 2018 at the CarePartners Solace Center. A native of Buncombe Co., Mr. Smith was a son of the late G.D. Smith, Sr. and Cora Penley Smith. Mr. Smith was a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. He was the President of Smithway, Inc., which provided custom built poultry transport trailers, and also Smith Farms, which grew cattle and poultry. He was the former Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Fairview VFD. He was also inducted into the NC Poultry Hall of Fame and was awarded The Order of the Pine Cone in 2002 by Gov. Michael Easley. Mr. Smith was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Janice Melton Smith; sons, Rocky Smith (Dee), Rod Smith (Angie), Tony Smith (Juanita), and Scott Smith (Tonya); and grandchildren, Lathan, Brian, Melton, Dakota, Krystal, Alaina, Bryson, Noland, and Kristie. A remembrance service for Mr. Smith will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2018, at the The Conference Center at Smith Farm in Fairview. Interment will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for a drop-in luncheon and visitation from 11:30 to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday at the farm, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oak Hill United Methodist Church Backpack and Outreach Fund, 277 Oak Hill Rd., Candler, NC 28715. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.

  5. The world lost a great man today. I loved how he as always thinking of ways to invent himself with many business skills. Loved that he loved the Tar Heels. Love his wife best of all! The adventures they have had in his life. So blessed to know this family. My prayer is for peace and comfort.

REYNOLDS FOOTBALL, WRESTLING TEAMS WHEN HIS BOYS WERE THERE I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH A THREE OF HIS BOYS ROCKY, TONY, SCOTT. I JUST LOVE THIS FAMILY AND MY HEART GOES OUT TO THEM. GOD BLESS.
