Genevieve Lewis Clark Burnette, 86, of 91 Reynolds School Road, Asheville, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at a local hospital.
Born November 28, 1917, and raised in Asheville, she was a daughter of the late Mack Thadeus and Matilda Hendricks Lewis. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Cleo C. Clark, who died in a truck accident in 1953; a daughter, Elizabeth Anne; a son, Tommy; a great-granddaughter; three sisters and five brothers.
She was born on Biltmore Estate and attended Biltmore School. Mrs. Burnette worked for C.P. Clare for 13 years before retiring and was active at both Reed Memorial Baptist Church and Rose Hill Baptist Church where she served as a junior and beginners class teacher and church clerk. She was a former member of Reynolds Fire Department Auxiliary for 29 years where she served as president and secretary for 15 years.
Mrs. Burnette is survived by her second husband Elbert “Tobe” Burnette, whom she married in 1964; two daughters, Aileene Clark Moore of Rutherfordton and Jeanette Clark Duncan of Fletcher; a son, Robert “Bob” Clark of Asheville; a sister, Frances “Penny” Lewis Anderson of Eutawville, SC; step-children, Ernest Burnette, J.W. Burnette, Elbert “Butch” Burnette, Jr. and Rebecca “Becky” Rickman; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; ten step-grandchildren; 21 step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday at Rose Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Robert Earwood and Timothy Burnette officiating. Burial will follow at Inanda Baptist Church Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 pm Monday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
It was so good to see the family at the visitation for Aunt Genevieve but so sorry for the occasion. I know this is a hard time for you. May God bless and comfort you all until we see her again in Heaven. Know our prayers are with you.
