Asheville - George F. Gilbert, Jr., 76, of Old Toll Road, died Friday, February 4, 2000 in an Asheville hospital.
A native of Brookline, Mass., he was a son of the late George F. and Alta Mae Yeaw Gilbert. He was also preceded in death by a step-son, Martin Green and two brothers, Arthur J. Gilbert and Fred Jennings. He was a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was Endowed in the Los Angeles California Temple. He was a retired from the US Marine Corps with 27 years of active service. He retired as a First/Master Sergeant, and had served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Among other commendations and decorations he had received the following: Good Conduct Medal with 5 stars; National Defense Service Medal with 1 star, Vietnamese Service Medal with 2 stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal; Sharpshooters Pistol Badge and the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Johnson Gilbert; three daughters, Madeline Pearson of Hamsted, NC, Jacqueline Whitman of Jacksonville, NC, Darlene Hartman of Winterville, NC; two sisters Mildred Moreau of Williamstown, Mass., Hilda Mae Pfeil of Denville, NJ; one brother, William Gilbert of Tarboro, NC; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 5:00 pm in the Church of Latter Day Saints on Sweeten Creek Road conducted by Bishop Thomas S. Helms, Jr. Interment with military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 pm Sunday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.
