George Howard Barr, 67, of Asheville, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2018 at the CarePartners Solace Center. A native of Jacksonville, FL, George was a son of the late John Henry Barr, Sr. and Gladys Barr Self. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Ann Barr. Mr. Barr was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Annapolis during Vietnam. He was a member of the VFW American Legion, and worked as a mechanic for John Deere. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Cathy Ann Paul Barr; sister, Anna Barr Jones; brothers, John H. Barr, Jr., Billy Jones (Patsy), and Richard L. Jones (Tina); and very much loved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Funeral services with Military Honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 25, at the Western Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery Chapel in Black Mountain. The Rev. Terry Sprouse will officiate. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.

  2. I’m so sorry for your loss Cathy. I was very fond of George, such a kind and dear person. Not sure how he did it but he made me happier by simply just seeing him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  3. I first met George around 1970, about the time I married into the Jones family (who adopted 3 of the Barr siblings). It was an honor and a pleasure to have known George, and Cathy as well. I am so sorry for your loss Cathy. I have been there.
    I will keep him and the rest of the family in my prayers as always.
