Georgia Chappell

georgia chappell
Georgia Mayfield Shelton Chappell passed on peacefully Wednesday, February 15 in Asheville. She was born in Broad River, NC, to Gladys and Elijah Shelton. After her mother passed away, she was lovingly raised by her grandparents Lola and John Nanney. She knew this to be an ideal childhood. She attended Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN. A member of the Civil Air Patrol, she loved to fly. She was awarded recognition for her work in the Asheville Photographic Society. Writing and photography were enduring interests for her. Most importantly, Georgia gave from her heart to each person whose path she crossed. Adventurous, kind, creative and loyal, without fail she held a positive outlook. She was a Christian Scientist and consistently studied and practiced a spiritual path. She was the wife of the late James C. Chappell and loving mother to Karen E. Chappell and the late John B. Chappell. She has four grandchildren, Laura and Julia Chappell-Campbell and Miles and Morgan Chappell. Her sisters are Helen Deaton, Vivian Gordon and the late Louise Curcio and has a brother, Harold Shelton. Her aunt, who was like a sister to her, was the late Ruth Davis. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 19 at 1:30 p.m. with a service following at 2:30 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave.

Guestbook

  1. Dear Karen, Julia, Laura, Miles and Morgan: I’m sorry that I can’t be with you Sunday. Lee can’t travel and I have no help on week ends. Our thoughts and prayers will be there, though. Blessings to you all. Aunt Georgia was a wonderful woman and will be missed.
    Love, LV and Lee

  2. Karen,
We will not be able to be with you Sunday, Lightning will be out of town and I have Benzi but want you to know you have been in out thoughts and will continue to be.
    Love,
    Sherry

  3. Dear Karen,
Your mother was a sweet and lovely person. I only got to know her late in life but so enjoyed the brief visits we did have and the conversations over the phone now and then. Many times we’d discuss things of science and nature. I was always surprised at her curiosity.
We used to write notes and letters to each other. I still have all of them.
We’ll remember Aunt Georgia with fond memories.
    With love and sympathy,
    Norma & Jerry

  4. Dear Karen,
What I’ll remember most about Georgia is her joyous spirit and her infectious laugh, her sense of humor, and her warmth.

We lived too far apart to see each other often and to be able to share family events, but through our letters and phone calls,we felt close.
    Love, Aunt Helen
