Georgia Stewart Karr, 92 passed away peacefully on August 23, 2022 at Aston Park Health Care Center in Asheville.

Born in Marshall, N.C. to the late George Graham and Manila (Nell) Haynie Stewart, she resided her first 43 years in the Asheville area.

She was married to Louie R. Luther (deceased 2011) for 21 years and together they raised four children: Sherry L. Coffey (Max – deceased); Mardy L. Murphy (Bill); Sue Lane L. Muesing (Jim – deceased); and Louie R. Luther, Jr. She was blessed with seven grandchildren: Sean Coffey (Julie); Christy Coffey Ferguson (Jeff); Jennifer Murphy Greenwald (Roby); Melissa Murphy Miller (Aaron); Desire Luther; Maria Luther; and Louie R Luther, III.

She leaves behind five great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

She was married to Wendell S. Karr for 42 years until his death in 2016. She and Windy enjoyed their lives together in Lake Wylie, South Carolina and Jupiter, Florida.

The last of her generation, she was preceded in death by sisters, Peggy Smith Long (2012) and Poconna Cauble Matthews (1993). Georgia’s love of family was contagious as her four nephews and four nieces would certainly agree.

Georgia was a lifetime Charter member of Asheville Drove #140 Benevolent Patriotic Order of D.O.E.S. and held the position of president in 1964. She attending many national D.O.E.S. conventions all over the United States. Throughout her life she enjoyed bowling, reading, boating, playing bridge, and flying to far-away places as co-pilot with pilot Windy by her side. Later in life, she developed a passion for tennis and participated in several USTA tennis tournaments.

A Memorial Service will be held at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 171 Beaverdam Road, at 11:00am this Saturday, September 17. Reverend Jeff McCumber will officiate and interment will follow in the church’s Memorial Garden.

  1. Georgia was a beautiful person who raised the finest family in Beaverdam. I will always remember how friendly she was. She was always so attentive and interested in people. She gave you her undivided attention when you were talking to her. Her children continue her warm spirit. She’ll be their angel for sure.
