Geraldine S. Cassara

geraldine cassara
Geraldine Schwartz Cassara passed gently from this life to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 2, 2005. Leaving with the grace and dignity with which she lived her life, Geraldine was surrounded by her family and friends. Born in Clifton, NJ on April 4, 1927, she was the only daughter of Emil and Alyce Heintjes Schwartz. Geraldine lived in Patterson, NJ, Brooklyn, NY, and Hialeah, FL, still she considered Asheville “home” and it is here she was happiest. Retired from AT & T, Geraldine would consider her children and grandchildren her greatest legacy. She is survived by her sons Frank, James and his fiancee Karen Etheredge, and William and his fiancee Kim Wietzbicki, along with her daughters Sara Ann Rossi and Diana Cassara and her fiancé Allen Sprouse. Other survivors include “adopted” son Pat Mulloy and his wife and daughter, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and Geraldine’s brother William Schwartz, his wife Rosie and daughter Gloria. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Geraldine’s many friends and heath care providers, especially the amazing group at Hospice Care for making her final journey a celebration reflective of her life. The funeral service will be at 12:00 noon Tuesday at Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Doug Tilley officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hills Cemetery on Leicester Highway. Her family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests donations be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building One, Asheville, NC 28801, or to Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church. 2 Bear Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  1. 7/8/05
    To the Cassara family:
Please accept my condolances on the loss of your funny, feisty, full of zest mother. She was full of life and truly made the world a better place for us all.
I enjoyed being her social worker at The Laurels of GreenTree Ridge and know the time spent with hospice was
    filled with joy of life.
I am grateful to have met and known your mother for even a brief time. She made me laugh and that is a gift.
    Sincerely,
    Sherry McConnell

  2. Hello Cassara Family,
All of the Dziki family sends or thoughts and prayers to you all. We all share some great memories of that wonderful block we all grew up on. Your Mom and Dad were very much a part of the neighborhood and we all share fond memories of both of them. God Bless, Stan Dziki (and the Dziki family).

  3. My heart goes out to the family. James is a good friend and I wish him and Karen many happy years to come.
Geraldine will live forever in your memories.

  4. Dear James and Family,

On behalf of all of James’ colleagues with the North Carolina A+ Schools Program, our deepest sympathy on the death of your mother, grandmother and friend.

  5. To Mr. James Cassara and Family: You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

  6. Geraldine certainly raised a son who is a credit to his friends, community and profession. Much appreciation for sending that Karma out into the world. J

  7. I worked with Geri at AT&T and considered her a friend. We kept in touch after the office closed, and I was very sorry to hear about her death.

  8. I knew Gerri when we both worked at the telephone company. It was a pleasure to have known her. May God bless each of your family in a special way.

  9. Dear James,
I’m so sorry to learn of your mother’s passing. I just lost my own father on June 21. I was so glad he was able to spend his final week at home with hospice care. The end was quiet and peaceful, but it is hard to lose a parent no matter what the circumstances. My heart goes out to you and your family.

  10. I can still hear Geri’s voice and laughter. She was a fine lady. I will miss Geri as I know all of her friends and family will. May God bless your family, give you comfort and peace.

    Carolyn Parker

  11. Bill,
My wishes and prayers are with you, your family – and with your Mom. Listening to you talk about her, she was right to think that her most important legacy was and always will be her children. Be well, my friend, and remember that she is no longer here, but she will never be gone.
    Ron

  12. Bill and family,

Praise God, for an angel has ascended! I am so thankful for God’s grace which allowed her not tarry in her condition. Although she will be greatly missed as the matriarch of your family, you will see her so very soon relative to eternity. Our time here is so short. God bless you all. Scot

  13. Geri was a delightful person to know. She was full of life and enjoyed her family and friends. I admired her passion for CWA and making sure her co-workers were represented. She was fun person to be around. I remember what she would always say at the union meetings (she never missed one!) ‘Now that the new/old business is over let’s get to the monkey business!’ I’ll bet she and Dennis Galliers are trying to organize the angels in heaven right now! God bless and comfort you.

  14. I am so sorry to hear of your mom’s death. I was her letter carrier and she was such a bright spot in my day when she would come to the mailbox and share her thoughts with me. She was a beautiful lady. I will keep your entire family in my prayers.

  15. Mrs. Cassara had a beautiful spirit. She was concerned not for herself, but those she leaves behind. She will be sorely missed.

  16. Dear James and family,
I’m sorry to hear of your mother’s death. Mothers are so very dear to our hearts.
    Sincerly,
    Melinda Waegerle

  17. James,Bill(and the entire Cassara family)I am sorry to hear of your loss.My heart goes out to you.

  18. To everyone that knew my grandmother, it is greatly appreciated what you all have done for her, past and present. My grandma never knew a stranger, and with the kindness and condolences that people have shared with me, I now know that this is true. May God bless each and every one of you, your families, and friends. Thank you for your warm hearts and kind blessings. I will never forget my grandma, and I hope none of you forget the angel that passed to a better life not long ago.

    Sincerely
    Jesse Gonzalez
