Geraldine Smathers Britt, 94, of Candler, passed away Monday, February 20, 2023.

A native of Buncombe Co., Geraldine was a daughter of the late Jerrell Gordon and Lillie Cogburn Smathers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Eugene Britt, son, Curtis Eugene Britt, Jr., and grandson, Jonathan J. Holt. She was the last surviving of 9 children.

Mrs. Britt was a Magna Cum Laude graduate from Mars Hill College, and she taught at Enka Middle School.

Surviving is her daughter, Jane Britt Jones and her husband, Greg, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at White Rock Baptist Church, with Rev. Brad Parker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to White Rock Baptist, PO Box 1277, Candler, NC 28715.

  1. So sad to read that Geri passed away. I enjoyed working with her at Enka Middle School and spent some time in their home when Gene played for our group to sing. Always appreciated her devotion to caring for her son Curtis. My condolences to Jane and prayers that God will be close to you during this time.

  5. Such amazing beautiful lady! A wonderful teacher and friend to so many. I was blessed to have her as a teacher. I enjoyed many years at church with her and Gene before I moved. My prayers go out to her family.

  7. Mrs. Britt was one of the most loving women I had met in along time. She loved sharing the word of the lord and the most caring women of others soul. She was always helping me understand so much about God and his loving and merciful soul. I love her so much and will miss her so much. She was always willing to pray With anyone at any giving time….My heart is so broken to know she is not a phone call away….
