Geraldine “Gerry” Bundrick Brooks, 79, of Candler, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center. She had battled stomach cancer for a year.

Gerry was born in Abbeville, SC, and grew up in Forest City, NC. She attended Cool Springs High School in Forest City and later graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, NC.

She taught school in Gastonia, Kings Mountain, and at the old Sand Hill Elementary School in Enka. She later taught in the GED program with AB Tech for 20 years.

Gerry is survived by her husband of 56 years, Larry G. Brooks; her son, John Larry, of the home; daughter, Jodene “Jodi” Kortman and husband Michael, of Birmingham, AL. She is also survived by the sunshine of her senior years, Ashlyn Brooke Kortman (15) and Lauryn Denise Kortman (14). “G.G.” loved making memories with her two granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jacob Ivey Bundrick, and her sister, Betty Jo Baynard. Her mother, Roberta Biggerstaff Bundrick, five nephews, and one niece also preceded her, perishing in a house fire in May, 1967.

Gerry and her family attended Enka Baptist Church for 42 years, where she served as Sunday School teacher and GA leader. For the past 13 years, she had been an active member of Hominy Baptist Church, serving both as deacon and on several committees. She had always been an active community volunteer with a variety of interests: Compassionate Friends, “Contact” (a crisis ministry), Craggy Correctional Center Community Resource Council, and the box office at Asheville Community Theater.

Gerry enjoyed being involved with people and making a difference where she could in people’s lives. She will be missed but never forgotten, and the way she lived her life is an inspiration for others.

A funeral service for Gerry will be at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. The Rev. Dr. Joe Yelton will officiate. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery with Dr. Bill Bigger officiating.

Her family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

Her family would like to thank the staff of CarePartners Hospice for their loving kindness and high quality of care given to Gerry during her illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to CarePartners Hospice, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
