Gertrude Bailey Barnwell, 85, of Snowball Lane, Fletcher, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 5, 2005 in a local hospital.
A native of Buncombe County, Mrs. Barnwell was the daughter of the late Oscar and Ida Barnett Bailey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Barnwell, who died in 1990, a son, Charles Barnwell, two grandsons and one great-grandson. She was a former employee of Gerber Retail Outlet and was a twenty-five year volunteer for ABCCM. Mrs. Barnwell was an active member of Fletcher First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and served in various duties in the church.
She is survived by two daughters, Willyse Bagwell and husband Buddy of Fletcher and Mildred Hayes and husband Harvey of Horse Shoe; daughter-in-law, Martha Barnwell of Mt. Home; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alberta Rhodes of Black Mountain and Myrtle Pressley of Pageland, SC; a brother, Oscar Bailey, Jr. of Asheville.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Fletcher First Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Waldroup and Rev. Tony Fowler officiating. Burial will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 -8:30 P.M. at the church.
At other times, the family will be at 10 Snowball Lane, Fletcher.
I remember the joy and laughter of the sisters sitting around the table when they could be together.
‘May He lift you up on eagles wings and hold you in the palms of His hands.’
Willyse, Sorry to hear about your mom. We missed the visitation because we just saw it in the paper today. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Let us know if you need anything. Tammy Barnwell and family.

I am so sorry to hear about your Mother. But I thank God HE is sufficient and will see you through. We know you will see her again. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. I do most certianly understand you loss and grief.

Willys and Buddy, I am extremely sorry for you loss. I loved your Mom a lot. She was very good to me especially when she had the fabric shop in Skyland.
