Gladys Beatrice Case Proffitt, 98, of 231 Pole Creasman Road, Asheville, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at her home. Mrs. Proffitt was born in Buncombe County and was a daughter of the late Charles and Lydia Jones Case. She was married to Joseph Bryson Proffitt who died in 1996. She retired after 30 years with American Enka and was a member of Bent Creek Baptist Church. Known as “Granny” to many, she is survived by two daughters, Reba Semmens of Homosassa, FL and Vivian (Peggy) McDonald of Asheville; a son Joseph B. Proffitt, Jr. of Asheville; two sisters Lucy Hollifield and Mabel Bishop of Asheville; a brother, Leonard Case of Asheville; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Phillip Hurst officiating. Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and request that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Reeves Chapel United Methodist Youth, 225 Sardis Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
