Glenn Joseph Leatherwood, Jr., 90, of Candler, passed away on Wednesday, June 7th, 2017, at the CarePartners Solace Center. Glenn was the son of the late Alma Duckett and Glenn Leatherwood, Sr. He graduated from Candler High School and enlisted in the US Army. He attended officers training school, including programs at Auburn and NC State. He was employed by American Enka for 35 years, retiring as the Day Supervisor for the Nylon Plant. He built the family home, doing his own electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and masonry. He enjoyed electronics and auto mechanics. Glenn raised beef cattle and chickens, and his family feasted on the honey from his bees. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, gospel music, and traveling with his wife and their camper. Since his early boy-hood, he was a faithful member of Montmorenci United Methodist Church. He served in many capacities including church secretary, Sunday School teacher, administrative board member, and various offices within the Methodist Men. He loved God and his church family and tried to live his faith everyday. Glenn was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Aileen; his sister, Mary Jane Crandall; and his brother, Jim Leatherwood. He leaves behind three children, Glenda Patterson (Dan), Tom Leatherwood (Cyndee), Bill Leatherwood (Gloria), 13 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves several nieces and nephews and a community of wonderful friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 PM on Monday, June 12th, at Montmorenci United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 with Pastor Karen Kurtz officiating. Private interment will take place at Greenhill Cemetery, Waynesville. The family asks that memorials be made to Montmorenci United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 610, Candler, NC 28715. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.

  5. What a sweetheart of a fella. I loved seeing him and his big ol’ smile. Even though he will be truly missed, I’m certain he’s having a great time with Jesus and lovely Aileen!
