Gordon Depew Lewis, 82, of Asheville, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at the Oaks at Sweeten Creek.
A native of Charlottesville, VA he was a son of the late Chauncey and Clarice Laugrue Lewis. He was also preceded in death by one brother and his wife.
Mr. Lewis proudly served in the US Army from 1951-1959. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and went on to earn additional degrees from Duke University and received his doctorate from Michigan State University. He worked as a professor of research for the US Forest Service.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Yoshie Mukaida Lewis; one brother, Harry Lewis and his wife as well as a nephew and several great-nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, April 30, 2012 in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team and the National Guard will provide military honors.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
