Grace Roberson Broyles Long, 97, passed away peacefully Friday, February 24, 2017, at the CarePartners Solace Center. She was the daughter of the late John F. Broyles, Sr. and Bessie R. Broyles of Canton. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Clyde S. Long, Jr., and brothers Claude Broyles, Marvin (Mark) Broyles, John F. (Jay) Broyles, Jr., and Morris Broyles. She is survived by her children, Elaine L. Melson of the home, R. Paul Long (Joyce) of Gaffney, SC, D. Ralph Long (Peggy) of Leicester, Karen L. Scarborough of Candler, Thomas (Tom) M. Long (Anita) of Morristown, TN, and Stanley (Stan) M. Long (Michelle) of Fountain Inn, SC; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Long was employed for more than 25 years with the American Enka Corp. She was a faithful member of Piney Mountain United Methodist Church for 72 years where she served as Sunday school teacher, choir member, president of the United Methodist Women, Vacation Bible School worker, and committee member for various groups. She was also a member of the Upper Hominy Volunteer Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary. She was a talented homemaker, cook and gardener, and was also known for her beautiful needlework, handmade Christmas tree ornaments and cornhusk dolls. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. At other times the family will be at the home of Karen Scarborough, 4 Lake Ridge Drive, Candler. Mrs. Long's funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Piney Mountain United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Bates officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to Piney Mountain United Methodist Church, 36 Piney Mountain Church Road, Candler, NC 28715.
